Dealing Effectively with Administrators

Administrators usually have a vision for their school and want to work with you to achieve that vision.  Occasionally, miscommunication or misunderstanding may occur between our members and their administrators. This is where your site representative is invaluable for helping you to work things out with your administrator.

Our grievance reps have found that sometimes problems arise because our teachers and counselors do not know how to proceed in given situations.

Here are a few helpful ideas to guide you:

Evaluation Conference:

bulletThe only goals that can be discussed during an evaluation are the ones to which YOU agreed to set in the beginning of the year.  Do not allow your administrator to change them mid year/end of year.
bulletIf any comments start to seem negative, stop the conference and ask that a TAWC representative be present. (Give the administrator your Rights Card)
bulletThe administrator may not have a secretary, or any other staff person present during the evaluation.
bulletNotes may not be taken during the evaluation.
bulletThe only administrator that may finish your evaluation is the one who observed you and discussed your goals earlier in the year.
bulletDo not backdate any evaluation for your own protection.
bulletThe administrator must finish your evaluation 30 days prior to the end date of the school year.
bulletDavid Boege, elementary grievance rep suggests that you write this statement below your signature on the evaluation… “My signature ONLY means that I have received a copy of this document.”

Other Suggestions:

bulletKEEP ALL written notes, memos, etc. from your administrator in a file.  (Keep over the years)
bulletMark on your calendar each and every  time an administrator visits your room.  Add comments as to the time and what lesson you were presenting.
bulletANYTIME you speak with an administrator and anything turns negative-  Ask for the meeting to stop or give the administrator your Rights Card until you may have another unit member present.
bulletIf an administrator walks in and asks you to identify the standard being taught in the lesson you are presenting – you can respectfully turn it around and ask the administrator to tell you what standard it is. Remember an Administrator's job is to assist you in delivering the best quality lessons possible to your students.   The administrator should know the standards as well as you.
